Intake of manganese in acidic soils is very high. On the other hand, it is low in alkaline soils. For this reason deficiency of manganese nutrient is seen in soils whose pH is higher than 7.
The cells of the plants with deficiency of manganese are small and their cell walls are thick. The part between leafs and veins gets yellow. This effect shows itself firstly on leaves.
The plants that are most sensitive to deficiency of manganese are beans, onion, peas, cucumber, tomato, oats, sugar beet, potatoes, cotton plant, peanut, apple, cherry and citrus fruit.
In general, manganese sulfate is applied from the soil in order to eradicate the deficiency of manganese. This application does not work in basic soil. Manganese EDTA or other (chelating agents) is applied from the leaf. But this does not constitute an annual solution.
